40th DAE Safety and Occupational Health Professional Meet

Chairman, AERB participated at the 68th Regular Session of the IAEA General Conference, held from 16 to 20 September 2024 at the Vienna International Centre (VIC) in Vienna, Austria.

After satisfactory safety reviews, AERB has issued permission on August 18, 2024 for raising reactor power of KAPP-4 up to 100% FP for completion of commissioning activities. KAPP-4 is the second unit of India’s indigenous design and constructed 700 MWe Pressurized Heavy Water Reactor (PHWR) to receive permission for full-power operation. The first unit, KAPP-3, received this permission on August 25, 2023.

<b>Permission for loading of Radial Blanket Sub-Assemblies in PFBR.</b></br> AERB has issued Permission for loading of radial Blanket Sub-Assemblies (SAs) in Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR) core on April 10, 2024, after satisfactory safety review. The PFBR is India's first indigenous 500MWe Fast breeder Reactor, at Kalpakkam in Tamil Nadu . The reactor core loading signifies an advanced stage of commissioning, towards making the reactor operational.

<b>AERB issues permission for the Phase-C Commissioning of KAPP-4.</b><br> The Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) issued Permission for the Phase-C Commissioning stage of Kakrapar Atomic Power Project Unit-4 (KAPP-4) on February 09, 2024, after a satisfactory Safety Review. KAPP-4 is the 2nd reactor in the series of indigenous 700 MWe PHWRs. In Phase-C Commissioning, the Reactor Power is increased, in stages, up to the rated power level, while performing the identified commissioning tests and assessing the plant data. Presently, KAPP-4 has been permitted to raise the power level up to 50% FP. Earlier, the Permission for First Approach to Criticality and Low Power Physics Experiments of KAPP-4 was issued on December 12, 2023.<br> Click here for permission copy.

AERB would like to clarify to public at large that AERB neither recognises nor certifies any radiation protective apron either with or without lead. It may be noted that Dr. Senthil Kumar has neither approached AERB nor received any such certification from AERB. Concerned individuals are hereby informed not to accept the claims about the above AERB certifications, by Dr. Senthil Kumar. AERB requests media houses to please fact-check with AERB, in case of doubts, before publishing such articles of self-proclamations.

AERB has issued permission for first approach to Criticality of KAPP Unit - 4, on December 12, 2023, based on satisfactory outcome of the requisite safety reviews. KAPP-4 is the second unit of the indigenous designed and built 700 MWe Pressurised Heavy Water based NPPs in India. This first step, wherein sustained nuclear fission is achieved in the nuclear fuel, will be followed by a series of identified experiments, as part of its commissioning. The first 700 MWe unit, KAPP-3 located at the same site, Kakrapar, underwent its First Approach to Criticality in July 2020 and was permitted by AERB to take its power to the full rated capacity in August 2023.
